2nd Grade sight words

August 16, 2010

Dear Parents,

According to state mandated testing, the second graders are required to meet certain criteria in reading by the end of the school year. One set of criteria includes being able to read a series of 300 high frequency words. These words are most often used in the second grade reading curriculum. Some of these words can be sounded out and some are sight words that must be memorized.

We are sending home a set of 100 words that each child will be tested over at the end of the first nine weeks. Please have your child go over these words during the next 8 weeks. A regular reading grade will be taken on this test.

Around parent teacher conference time we will send another set home. The test for those will be at the end of December. The last set will be sent home in January and the test will be given in March. These tests will also be for a reading grade.

It is encouraging that many of our students already know quite a few of these words. (Our Saxon phonics has helped us in this area.) We want to make sure the students retain what they have learned.

Thank you so much for your cooperation!

The Second Grade Teachers,
Mrs. Hulsey
Mrs. Leftwich
